I just wanted to write this quick blog post to celebrate the fact that today (May 21st 2012) is Infinity IRC’s 3rd birthday!

I (Henry/Henco) started the network on May 21st 2009, with a friend from school, running on a home server under my desk. We started back then on the domain name infinityirc.co.uk. This continued for a few months but we didn’t get many people due to lack of advertising/interest/knowledge. My friend lost interest and I found some new people to help run the network with me. We started introducing VPS’ into Infinity’s infrastructure, and phased out my home server by November 2009. We bought the domain name infinityirc.com and continued expanding and growing.

3 years on, May 21st 2012, we have more great channels than ever, and a lovely community. I’d like to thank you all for being part of it over the years, and here’s to many more! *raises glass*

Please feel free to comment any thoughts/feelings/memories.

Henry xxx (love u long time)

Nickname registration is a simple process. All you need is to be connected to Infinity IRC and have access to your emails.

In your IRC client, or the web irc client, type the following command:

/msg nickserv register <password> <email address>

(Replacing <password> and <email address> with the correct respective values)

Your nickname will then be preliminarily registered. To complete registration, you now need to check your email inbox for a registration confirmation email from our services.

NB: We use proxying to protect the source IPs of our emails and services in order to avoid attacks causing detriment to the network. As a result of this, email can often take a while, so please be patient. It’s usually only a few minutes, but if you don’t get a confirmation email within half an hour, please notify our staff in #support.

Once you receive the confirmation email, it will contain a command and confirmation code which you must then enter into your IRC client connected to Infinity IRC in order to confirm your nickname registration. Once you’ve done this, all is good. Your nickname is registered and you can enjoy the features available to registered users.

Infinity IRC offers vanity hosts (vHosts) to anyone connecting to the network. The process is simple – you don’t even need to join any channels.

Simply type the following command into your IRC client, or the webchat on the website:

/msg hostserv request <vHost>

Replacing <vHost> with the vHost you require.

Your vHost request will be sent to our staff team, who should process your request within a few hours. Once approved by staff, you will get a notice providing you are connected to IRC, letting you know that your vHost has been approved and you can activate it by typing /hs on. If you disconnect, staff will process your vHost request anyway, so if you’re not sure whether it’s been approved or not just ask in support or check by attempting to activate it (/hs on).

Please note that vHosts which use real domain name extensions i.e. example.com, example.org, will need confirmation of ownership. Any other made up extension i.e. example.vhost or john.doe will simply be checked by staff and approved as long as it is in line with our vHost Policy.

Hope this helps – any questions please feel free to ask in #support.

It came to my attention that the only way to discover channels on Infinity IRC was to use the /list command or look at the channels list on the website. Both of these, however, merely list the channels by number of users present, and this is not always the best way to look at things.

Here’s a small list of perhaps the most popular channels on Infinity IRC by activity, and a small description.

#Infinity – Main network hub channel. This is where most people on the network are, and where you’re welcome to talk about virtually any subject you wish to.

#jake – Technology-themed channel based around the online presence of tech guru Jake Wright.

#drunks – Founded by Infinity IRC’s resident drunk, Robby, this channel is simply a place for the drunks to hang out and “talk”.

#iDominateU – This channel is home of iDominateU and some Australians. Good place to go if you like gaming and minecraft.

There are also a few channels which provide services and assistance:

#bnc4free & #EliteBNC – These channels both provide free IRC Bouncers, allowing you to keep connected to IRC even with your PC off.

#support – The Infinity IRC support channel. If you need help with anything IRC related, this is probably your best bet.

Hopefully this will help you find the channels that suit you. If there’s any I’ve missed out which you feel should be added, feel free to email henco@infinityirc.com with suggestions.
